How to prevent fungus gnats in potted plants?Updated 3 months ago
To prevent fungus gnats:
- Pay attention to watering: Mourning flies like moist soil. Let the top layer of potting soil dry thoroughly before watering.
- Proper drainage: Use pots with holes and a saucer underneath or an inner pot. Add hydro pellets and, if necessary, use a moisture meter to prevent overwatering.
- Cover the soil: Cover the top layer of potting soil with a thin layer of sand, hydro pellets or pebbles. This makes it less attractive for mourning flies to lay eggs.
- Check new plants: Check the soil of new plants you bring into your home to avoid bringing fungus gnats inside.
- Use sticky traps: Place yellow catch tags near your plants to catch adult fungus gnats early and keep the infestation under control.
